Redemption bourbon8/17/2023 Unlike most Rye Whiskeys in the market, Redemption stands out by utilizing a mash that is high in rye content, reaching up to 95%, resulting in a whiskey with distinct spicy and grassy notes. Palate: Rye spice, anise, clove, vanilla, oak.Redemption is owned by the Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits company based in White Plains, NY.Crafted at MGP of Indiana Distillery and bottled in Bardstown.The mash is comprised of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley.Aged for 2 and a half years on average in new, charred American oak barrels.Serving Redemption Bourbon on the rocks brings about an improvement, though it’s important to avoid excessive dilution as it can dull the flavors significantly. While it can be enjoyed neat, there is nothing particularly memorable or exceptional to highlight, as it tends to come across as somewhat generic. It is an easily approachable bourbon, offering a light and enjoyable drinking experience with a restrained presence of oak spice. Redemption Bourbon provides a predominantly smooth flavor profile, with a combination of sweet and spicy notes and minimal to no harshness. The finish is short-lived, featuring lingering notes of vanilla and a touch of oak spice, but overall it remains fairly neutral. It offers a mild sweetness and a smooth texture, with hints of walnuts, cinnamon, vanilla, and oak spice. When tasted, this bourbon lacks a substantial body, feeling somewhat thin. The Redemption Bourbon reveals a subtle sweet aroma on the nose, accompanied by notes of cinnamon and oak. This is a sweet, softer bourbon on the palate with a kick-ass finish. This bourbon takes it right to the limit without going over the line. It’s all white pepper all the time, but it is enjoyable. The experience jumps to the roof of the mouth without abandoning the tongue action. The flavor is slightly sweet with cereal, oak, caramel and vanilla over some white pepper. On the palate, there is a very light mouthfeel with much tongue activation, most of it on the mid-mouth to the tip of the tongue. The nose is light cereal grain, oak, sage, some alcohol with no burn and complimentary vanilla. The color is dark gold/copper with orange brass highlights. If you wonder what that means, a higher wheat content tends to soften and sweeten the whiskey. Going higher usually means going all the way from wheated bourbon to wheat whiskey. It’s much more common to have a 20 to 30% wheat content in a bourbon although. A four year old must come from one of the initial batches produced, and this Redemption release is the first known example from that stock. This was one of several new whiskey recipes introduced by MGP in 2013. However, this is a first in terms of the unique MGP mash bill with 51% corn, 45% winter wheat and 4% malted barley. Wheated bourbons have been a hot category for years, so this new Redemption won’t be any enthusiast’s first rodeo with wheaters. This Redemption Wheated Bourbon is four years old and bottled at 96 proof. “The release of our Redemption Wheated Bourbon represents the first in a series of limited production expressions that we will bring to market over the next few years,” said Tom Steffanci, President of Deustch Family Wine & Spirits, in a prepared statement.
